While those who risk their lives for others are certainly heroes, so heroes are also those whose character and achievements make them worthy role models. In fact, in terms of lives saved, scientists have had an enormous impact on society, as evidenced by the Web site and book Science Heroes. I recommend exploring that site for their inspiring stories.

Hollywood is by no means a model of reality, and I didn't intend to suggest that. Rather, the decisions by so many Hollywood writers and producers to portray scientists and engineers as heroes reflects their perception that the public readily accepts scientists and engineers in that role. In telling its stories, Hollywood follows public perceptions in order to resonate with its audience.

This article is a commentary on Hollywood's perception of scientists in a particular role. Since when is Hollywood a model of reality? I suppose you believe a person can take a beating and not sustain any injury as commonly depicted by the same institution you endear.

1.
a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

2.
a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.

Please point out where all these 'heroes' in the scientific community are located. I have been in academia and industry and most appear not have even seen the light of day, much less risked their life for the good of another.
